Dover, Del. (Feb. 10, 2014) --- The 2014 Delaware State University baseball team has received its share of positive previews for the upcoming season.
College Baseball America has selected the Hornets as its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference “team to beat” for the 2014 season. The publication has also listed Delaware State outfielder/pitcher Hassan Evans (sr.) as its No. 1 professional prospect in the MEAC this season.
Evans was a 2013 All-MEAC Second Team selection after batting .366, with eight doubles, three triples and 15 stolen bases (15-17) last season. He also pitched in six games (17.1 IP) a year ago. College Baseball America sites Evans' 90-plus mile-per-hour fastball in its preseason assessment.
In addition, Delaware State tops the 2014 College Sports Madness preseason All-MEAC Baseball Team with five First Team selections. The publication has named Hornets Matt McClain (sr.; Pitcher), Cameron Cecil (sr.; 3B), Edie Sorondo (sr.; Catcher), Aaron Nardone (sr.; Outfield); and Mike Alexander (sr.; Utility) to its preseason all-conference squad.
Evans was named to the 2014 College Sports Madness Preseason All-MEAC Second Team as an outfielder.
Cecil and Sorondo have been named to the All-MEAC First Team in each of the last two seasons, while Nardone and Alexander were also 2013 first team selections. McClain and Evans were 2013 All-MEAC Second Team picks.
The Hornets return 14 letterwinners from 2013 squad, which posted a 33-15 overall record and captured their second straight MEAC North title with a 21-3 mark in league games.
Delaware State begins its 2014 season with a three-game series at North Carolina Asheville this weekend. The teams will play single games on Feb. 14 to the 16th in Asheville, N.C.
The Hornets will play their home opener on Fri., Feb. 21 against Iona (2:00 p.m.). DSU will also host Bucknell on Feb. 22 (10:30 a.m.) and Feb. 23 (2:30 p.m.).
