DOVER, Delaware --Michael Lane dominated on Friday, fanning 11 Maryland-Eastern Shore hitters over 6.2 innings of work to help lead the Delaware State Hornets over the Hawks 5-4.
In addition to his 11 strikeouts, Lane (3-6) threw 6.2 innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on 10 hits and walking two for Delaware State (2-27, 3-13). Sean Ely also made an impact on the mound for the Hornets, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings while allowing no hits.
At the plate, the Hornets were paced by Alec Rodriguez, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a double, a walk and an RBI. Jaryn Sample put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Jabril Bullock also chipped in for Delaware State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Hornets first put runs on the board in the first inning. Delaware State plated a run on a based-loaded walk by Sample.
The Hawks then scored two runs to retake their advantage heading into the third inning, when the Hornets responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. The Delaware State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of Hassan Turner, which brought the Hornets lead to 5-3. The Hornets will return to the field tomorrow for game two in a three-game conference series. The first pitch is schedule for 1:00 p.m.
