BALTIMORE, Md. --Senior Sebastian Paz and sophomore Jaryn Sample each racked up three RBIs, but the Delaware State Hornets fell to the UMBC Retrievers 10-9 on Wednesday.
Freshman Ethan Johnson (0-1) came out of the bullpen for Delaware State (3-12) and took the loss.
Sample went 3-for-4 at the plate in addition to his three RBIs and Paz put together a 1-for-4 day, supplementing his three RBI performance for the Hornets. Freshman Carter Boyd compiled a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a double, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning.
The Hornets then held the Retrievers scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. The Delaware State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Paz and a two-run single from Sample, which brought the Hornets lead to 7-0.
Delaware State's lead had disappeared by the time the eighth inning came around and turned into a 10-7 UMBC advantage, when the Hornets cut that deficit to 10-8.
Delaware State kept the Retrievers off the board before narrowing the gap further in the ninth. Freshman S. Harwood crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Hornets, bringing the score to 10-9 in favor of UMBC. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
