NEWARK, Del. --The Delaware State Hornets struggled on Wednesday, falling to the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens 22-2 despite the efforts of freshman Hassan Turner, who went 2-for-4 with a double.
Freshman Jeremy Vest (0-1) got the ball to start for Delaware State (1-4) and took the loss. Freshman Ryan Mejia was a bright spot for the Hornets, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.2 shutout innings, allowing one hit, with four walks and four strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets were trailing 16-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Freshman Brandon Boyd came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State and get them on the board.
The Fightin' Blue Hens expanded their lead to 22-1 before the Hornets offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the seventh. Delaware State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Jaryn Sample, which tightened the Fightin' Blue Hens lead to 22-2. The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short.
