NEWARK, Del. --An outstanding offensive output was not enough for Delaware State on Tuesday. The Hornets scored eight runs, but could not hold the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens at bay, and were bested 14-8.
Junior Brandon Hatch (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Delaware State (1-3, ). Freshman Eddie Del was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking three and striking out three.
Sophomore Joey Current led the way offensively for the Hornets, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. Sophomore E Bouldin put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Senior Chris Amparo also helped out, going 1-for-2 for Delaware State with a double and three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Delaware State hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring four runs.
The Hornets then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Fightin' Blue Hens cut it to 4-2. Senior Jancarlos Colon came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State, which brought the Hornets lead to 5-2.
Delaware State's lead had disappeared once the fifth inning arrived and turned into a 7-5 Delaware advantage, when the Hornets cut that deficit to 7-6.
The Fightin' Blue Hens expanded their lead to 10-6 before the Delaware State offense got back in gear, digging into that lead in the seventh. Amparo crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Hornets, bringing the score to 10-7 in favor of Delaware.
Delaware built on their lead to 13-7 before the Hornets offense got rolling, narrowing that lead to 13-8 in the eighth. Senior Brady Daniels came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State and get them on the board. The Hornets were unable to get any closer, as Delaware added one run to their tally on the way to a 14-8 final. Delaware State's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed four runs across. Delaware State pitchers faced 53 Delaware hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out seven. The Hornets drew seven walks from Delaware pitching.
