CHARLESTON, S.C. --Senior Chris Amparo put together an outstanding outing at the plate Sunday, hitting two homers to help propel the Delaware State Hornets past the Charleston Southern Buccaneers 8-3.
Freshman Kieran Etwaru (1-0) got the win for Delaware State (1-2). The right-hander went six shutout innings, giving up two hits, three walks and striking out seven. Sophomore E. Bouldin started the ballgame and went one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.
Amparo went 4-for-4 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with a double while driving in three runs. Senior Jancarlos Colon added to Amparo's awesome power-hitting performance by going 1-for-2 along with three walks. Sophomore Jack Messmore also helped out for the Hornets, going 1-for-4 with two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Delaware State got an RBI single from Colon, scoring Bouldin from second base.
The Buccaneers failed to push any runs across before the Hornets built on their lead in the third inning. Colon came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State, which brought the Hornets lead to 2-0.
Delaware State kept Charleston Southern without a run before building their lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning.
Delaware State held the Buccaneers without a run before building on their lead in the seventh inning. The Hornets picked up a run on Amparo's two-out solo home run off senior Zac Robinson, bringing the score to 5-0 in favor of Delaware State.
Charleston Southern got within 5-3 until the Hornets scored again in the ninth inning to stretch its lead to 8-3. The score remained 8-3 for the rest of the game, as the Hornets coasted to the win. Etwaru struck out seven Buccaneers hitters. Delaware State's highest scoring inning was the ninth, when it pushed three runs across. Delaware State took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game. Etwaru put together six innings of shutout ball for the Hornets. The Hornets out-hit the Buccaneers at an 8-3 clip. Delaware State pitchers limited Charleston Southern to just 1-for-8 (.125) with runners in scoring position. The Hornets drew eight walks from Charleston Southern pitching. Charleston Southern was led offensively by senior Cade Conway, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Hornets will return Tuesday, February 20Â when they travel across town to the University of Delaware. First Pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
