REGULAR SEASON CHAMPION HORNETS TOP SEED IN 2022 MEAC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

Dover, Del. (May 16, 2022) --- Delaware State, the 2022 MEAC regular season baseball champion, is the top seed in the conference championship tournament this week in Norfolk, Va.
The Hornets have won their last five games, each in conference, to claim their first outright MEAC regular season title. Delaware State won six MEAC Northern Division titles from 2001 to 2014.
The Hornets (22-21; 9-14 MEAC) will take on the host school and No. 4 seed Norfolk State (15-30; 12-18) in the tournament opener on Thursday (May 19) at 12:00 p.m. at NSU's Marty Miller Field.
Delaware State is seeking its second first MEAC Tournament championship. The Hornets won their lone title in 1989, defeating Howard 17-2 in the championship game.
No. 2 seed will face No. 3 Maryland-Eastern Shore in the other opening round game.
The two opening round winners will face off on Friday (May 20) at 12:00 p.m. for right to advance to the championship round on Saturday (May 21).
The two opening round losers will compete to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Delaware State and Norfolk State met 12 times in the 2022 regular season, with the Hornets holding an 8-4 advantage, including a 5-3 mark at the Spartans' Marty Miler Field. Norfolk State holds an 11-6 advantage in MEAC Tournament contests between the teams. The teams are meeting in the MEAC Tournament for the first time since Delaware State posted a 13-11 victory in Salisbury, Md., in 2015.
Norfolk State won the 2021 championship in extra-inning, walk-off fashion over North Carolina Central, the Spartans' first-ever title. Coppin State is in search of its first MEAC baseball title since 1995.
Maryland Eastern Shore is in search of its first-ever MEAC baseball title.
