Hornets host Eagles and Bulldogs in MEAC competition

DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State women's volleyball team returns to Memorial Hall for back-to-back Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchups with the Eagles of North Carolina Central University and the Bulldogs of South Carolina State University.

After suffering a five-set setback to Howard University last Friday, Delaware State earned a 3-1 win over Norfolk State last Sunday to improve to 16-6 overall with a 6-3 mark in MEAC play this season.

The Hornets swept both the Eagles and the Bulldogs in straight sets when visiting each team earlier in the season and are aiming to achieve the same result on home court this weekend.

Against both teams, Delaware State's offense was led in large part by the outside hitting duo of Karen Cordero and Valeria Otero. Cordero totaled a team-high 20.5 points scoring 3.42 points per set during this road trip. She recorded 14 kills, six service aces and one assisted block. Otero notched 17.0 points after collecting 13 kills, three service aces and a pair of assisted blocks. Junior middle blocker Alondra Maldonado landed a team-best 18 kills averaging an even 3.00 kills per set and got in on four assisted blocks to join Cordero in tallying at least 20 points with 20.0 for an average of 3.33 points per set between both wins.

Delaware State also dominated defensively holding both teams to 33 total kills and an average hitting percentage of .020%. Senior middle blocker Sydney Lewis led the charge with eight total blocks including a team-high three solo blocks for an average of 1.33 blocks per set during these two wins.

As for Friday night, Cordero and Otero look to continue the success they had in the earlier matchup against North Carolina Central University as they both recorded double-digit point performances in the win. Cordero (10.5) tallied seven kills, three service aces and an assisted block while Otero (10) notched a tie for a match-high eight kills, a pair of assisted blocks and one service ace. Maldonado joined Otero with a match-high eight kills and got in on a pair of assisted blocks for nine points in the win.

North Carolina Central will look to its freshman standouts Tori Wilson and Kamren Harper to get the Eagles back in the win column. Wilson, the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, played a pivotal role in the team's 3-0 win over Morgan State on Friday recording 13 kills, one service ace and one block. Harper currently leads her team in points (220.0) scoring 3.06 points per set as well as kills (190) landing 2.64 kills per set.

After Friday night's match, Delaware State will host South Carolina State University at Memorial Hall on Sunday.

Cordero and Maldonado paced the offensive efforts in the Hornets' 3-0 win having recorded double-digit point performances. Maldonado racked up a game-best 10 kills and was in on two assisted blocks for a match-high 11 points. Cordero tallied seven kills and a match-best three service aces.

Defensively, Lewis led Delaware State with a pair of solo blocks and three assisted blocks.

The Bulldogs will count on junior outside hitter Semira Fields to get South Carolina State in the win column. Fields currently leads her team in points (86.5) and kills (74).
