Hornets defeat Saint Peter's 3-1 after dropping first set

JERSEY CITY, NJ --The Delaware State volleyball team fired back after dropping set one to secure a 3-1 win (20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-19) against the Saint Peter's Peacocks Wednesday on the road at Yanitelli Center.

The non-conference victory improved Delaware State's overall record to 4-0 on the season.

Aaliyah Mitchell finished with 14 kills on the day to lead the Hornets offense. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Courtney Nix had 22 and Paige Ahakuelo had 10. From the front row, Hannah Sanders contributed eight blocks.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets found themselves in an early hole, dropping the first set 25-20. Delaware State trailed by as many as seven points as Saint Peter's never surrendered the lead in a set that was tied up zero times before the Peacocks took control.

SET 2 | Delaware State responded to pick up a 25-19 victory in the second set, evening the match at one set apiece. The Hornets never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11 in a set that showcased three lead changes before Delaware State took over the lead. The Delaware State offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. Delaware State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Saint Peter's attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Delaware State won again in the third set to make it a 2-1 match. The Hornets took the lead for good at 15-14 in a set that showcased three lead changes before Delaware State took over in the second half of the stanza. They then carried that lead to a 25-23 set win.

SET 4 | Delaware State claimed a match win with a 25-19 fourth-set victory, winning their third set in a row. The Hornets took the lead for good at 16-15 in a set that had just one lead change before the Hornets took over in the second half of the stanza. Delaware State also supplemented their offense with four aces in the set.

Delaware State will return to action on Friday, September 4 when they face NJIT in day one of the DSU Tournament. The first serve are scheduled for 7 p.m.
