Hornets rally from 2-0 hole, defeat North Carolina Central in 5 sets to advance to the semifinals

BALTIMORE, MD --The No. Delaware State volleyball team fought back from a 2-0 hole to secure a come-from-behind five-set victory (26-28, 23-25, 25-22, 25-15, 16-14) against the No. North Carolina Central Eagles Thursday at Physical Education Complex.

The out-of-conference win improved the Hornets' overall record to 12-17 on the season.

The Hornets were led by double-doubles from both Amanda Santos Juliao, who had 19 kills and 10 digs, and Gerren Tomlin, who had 20 kills and 14 digs. Aaliyah Mitchell also added 16 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Emma Crakow chipped in for with 16 digs to go with five blocks from Kelsie Dawson.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets battled back from a seven-point 19-12 deficit, but North Carolina Central held on to win the first set 28-26.

SET 2 | A 25-23 set-two loss put Delaware State in a 2-0 hole in the match. The Hornets came up short in a back-and-forth set, losing in a stanza that featured four lead changes and was tied seven times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way.

SET 3 | After dropping sets one and two, Delaware State fought back to win set three and make it a 2-1 match. The Hornets took the set 25-22 helped by a strong showing on the attacking end. Delaware State registered a .548 attack percentage with 20 kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands four times, the Hornets took control for good at 21-20 and rode that advantage to victory.

SET 4 | Delaware State continued their comeback, winning the fourth set 25-15 to bring the match level at two sets apiece. The Hornets took control of the set at 4-3 and never looked back. Delaware State ended the stanza on a high note by opening up its biggest lead, 10 points, to close out the set. Delaware State also supplemented their offense with four aces in the set.

SET 5 | Delaware State lost the first two sets, but put together an epic rally to win the next three sets, culminating in a 16-14 fifth-set victory, and take the match 3-2. The Hornets earned a set-five victory with the help of a strong showing on the attacking side. Delaware State put together a .357 attack percentage with 12 kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands two times, the Hornets took control for good at 15-14 and rode that advantage to victory.

Delaware State will return to action on Friday, November 21. The Hornets will take on the Eagles of Coppin State University in the semifinals. The first serve are scheduled for 5 p.m.
