Box Score Norfolk, Va. (May 21, 2021) --- Delaware State battled back from a seven-run deficit to tie the game, but came up short in the end, closing out its season with a 14-13 loss to Florida A&M in a MEAC Tournament contest at Marty Miller Field today. The Hornets suffered their second loss in the double-elimination tournament to end the season with a 15-28 overall record.
In addition to 27 runs and 26 hits, the wild affair included nine errors, six by the Rattlers, 17 walks, six wild pitches and three hit batters.
Delaware State opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning on a sac fly by
Krew Bouldin and a single by
Cole Garey.
After Florida A&M scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead, the Hornets put a run on the board in the top third on a throwing error by the Rattlers to tie the score.
Florida A&M answered with five runs in the bottom of the third to open up an 8-3 lead.
The Rattlers scored two more in the fifth to stretch their lead to 10-3.
The Hornets got back into the game on one swing of the bat in the top of the sixth. Bouldin led off the inning with a single, followed by walks to
Cole Garey and
Jared Gillis to load the bases with none out. The next batter,
Tripp Kimmell, hit a shot over the wall in right field for a grand slam to pull the Hornets to within 10-7.
Florida A&M answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh to lead 11-7.
Delaware State again climbed back into the game with an eighth-inning rally. Kimmell led off the rally with a one-out single. He was still at first with two outs when
Mark Herron doubled down the right field line. The ball was booted by Florida A&M, allowing Kimmell to score to cut the Rattlers' lead to 11-8.
The Hornets scored their second run of the inning on a bases loaded walk to
Trey Paige and two more crossed the plate on wild pitches by the Rattlers to tie the score at 11-11.
Florida A&M responded with three runs in the bottom eighth to open up a 14-11 advantage.
Delaware State again refused to quit, putting the potential tying runs on base in the top of the ninth inning. The Hornets loaded the bases with two outs when
John Weglarz singled in two runs to pull DSU to within a run, but the game ended when Paige was retired on strikes with runners at third and first.
Kimmell was two-for-four with four runs batted in, while Paige and Bouldin notched two hits each in the contest.
