Dover, Del. (May 18, 2021) --- Delaware State's
Trey Paige (so.) and
Cole Garey (sr.) were selected to the 2021 All Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Baseball First Team, while
John Weglarz (sr.) was a second team honoree and
Miguel Rivera a third team pick in voting by league head coaches and sports information representatives announced today.
Paige, selected to the All-MEAC First Team outfield, was second among all league players with at least 100 at bats with a 381 average during the regular season, including a .383 mark vs. MEAC opponents. He's also tops in the league in slugging percentage (.657), on-base percentage (.485) and second in doubles (12). In addition, Paige is among the league leaders in hits (50), runs scored (34), RBI (31), home runs (5), total bases (81) and walks (28).   Â
Garey has been honored as the All-MEAC First Team utility player. He's batting .304 overall (.315 in MEAC games) and is second on the Hornets with 29 runs batted in, and tied for second on the team with four home runs this season. He has hit safely in 28 of the 40 games in which he has appeared, including a team-high 12 straight from Mar. 27 to Apr. 17.
Weglarz was selected as the All-MEAC Second Team shortstop.  He's batting .331 this season and ranks among the  MEAC leaders in batting average, hits, doubles, total bases slugging percentage and fielding percentage this season. In addition, Weglarz is second on the Hornets in hits (46), slugging percentage (.475) and doubles (11), and third on the club with 28 RBI. He's also tied for second on the team with a .407 on-base percentage and recorded an eight-game hit streak, second best on the team this season. Â
Rivera, the 2021 All-MEAC Third Team second baseman, is fourth on the Hornets with a .298 season average and tied for second on the team with four home runs. In addition, he's tops on the club with 41 runs scored and nine stolen bases.
Norfolk State infielder/pitcher Danny Hosley was selected as the 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player-of-the-Year, presented by TowneBank. North Carolina Central redshirt sophomore Ryan Miller earned Pitcher-of-the-Year honors, while Chet Sikes of North Carolina Central was named Rookie-of-the-Year. North Carolina Central's Jim Koerner received Coach-of-the-Year accolades.Â
The 2021 MEAC Baseball Tournament begins Thursday (May 20) in Norfolk, Va. Delaware State will face off against North Carolina Central, while Norfolk State will battle Florida A&M in the opening round of the four-team, double-elimination tournament.
The tournament champ receives the MEAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Div. I national championship tournament.
