Box Score 2 Dover, Del. (Apr. 9, 2021) --- Delaware State scored seven runs in the fifth inning to highlight its 8-6 MEAC North victory over Coppin State in game one of a doubleheader at Joe Cannon Stadium today. Game two was suspended due to thunderstorms, and will be resumed as part of a doubleheader on Saturday.
In the seven inning opener, the Hornets trailed 3-1 before the fifth inning explosion. DSU sent 11 men to the plate and collected eight hits in the inning.
Miguel Rivera singled to lead off the Delaware State fifth and advanced to third on a double down the left field line by
John Weglarz.
Trey Paige followed with a single to right, chasing home Rivera to cut Coppin State's lead to 3-2. The next batter,
Cole Garey, doubled to right center to score Weglarz and Paige, putting the Hornets in front 4-3. After
Krew Bouldin singled to center to put runners at third and first,
Mark Herron tripled to left center, scoring Bouldin and Garey to give DSU a 6-3 lead. There were two outs in the inning when
Mason Brewer reached base on an error and
Mike Worthington followed with a homer to left, extending the Hornets' lead to 8-3.
Coppin State scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but DSU closer
Chandler Fitzgerald recorded the final out to notch his third save of the season. Â
The Hornets outhit the Eagles 14-5 in the contest. Rivera had a game-high three hits in five at bats, while Weglarz, Garey and Bouldin tallied two each.

Cole Bates pitched six-plus innings to earn his first win of the season (1-2).
