Tripp Kimmell
Box Score Hanover, Md. (Apr. 10, 2021) --- The Delaware State baseball team posted an 8-5 win over Coppin State in the completion of a game suspended on Friday and rallied for a 7-5 victory in the regularly scheduled contest today to stretch its win streak to a season-high four games.
The Hornets trailed 1-0 when Friday's game was halted due to thunderstorms.
Mike Worthington and Tripp Kimmell each had two hits and two runs batted in, while Miguel Rivera and Cole Garey collected two hits and a RBI to lead the Hornets' 11-hit attack.
DSU trailed 5-3 before closing out the scoring with five unanswered runs over the last four innings.
Garey singled in a fourth inning run to cut the Eagles' lead to 5-4 and the Hornets tied the score on Rivera's fifth inning single.
Kimmell's two-run double in the sixth gave DSU a 7-5 lead.
Delaware State scored three runs in the second inning to lead 3-2. Worthington's two-run single was the big hit in the inning.
Hornet relievers Hiram Davis and Chandler Fitzgerald combined to throw 3.2 scoreless innings. Fitzgerald retired the Eagles in order in the seventh to earn his fourth save.
In the regularly scheduled game today, DSU opened the scoring with three first inning runs. Trey Paige drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly and the Hornets scored two on Coppin State errors.
Coppin State scored four runs in the third on a grand slam by Conner Walker to open up a 5-3 lead, which stood until Delaware State put four on the board in the sixth to regain the lead.
Jared Gillis doubled in the first run of the inning and Arthur Burrell drove in the second run on sacrifice bunt to tie the game at five. Two batters later, Rivera slugged a home run over the fence in left to give the Hornets a 7-5 lead.
Freshman Ryan Rigby threw four scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits while striking out six and walking just one, to earn his first collegiate win.
DSU has improved its overall record to 9-12, including 7-4 in the MEAC, with its two wins today.
The Hornets will look for the series sweep when the team close out the weekend with a single on Sunday.
