Akron, OH (Mar. 9, 2021) --- Delaware State reached a season-high in goals scored, but it was no consolation in an 18-5 loss to Akron today.
Alexis Kiefer had six goals and an assist, while Noelle Boyd scored four times to lead the Zips.
Gwenna Gentle was high scorer for the Hornets with two goals, while
Tamrin Swann,
Emmy McGill and Rosella Nardi tallied one each. McGill also recorded an assist.
The game was scoreless for nearly 10 minutes before Akron broke the ice on a goal by Jacqueline Glassey with 20:34 left in the opening period.
Delaware State answered with back-to-back scores to lead for the first time this season. Nardi scored the Hornets' first to tie the score at 1-1 with at the 19:15 mark of the opening period.
About three-and-half minutes later, Swann hit pay dirt with an unassisted goal to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead with 14:40 left in the first.
The Zips responded with four straight goals, including the first by Kiefer, to open up a 5-2 lead.
McGill scored on a free position shot for the Hornets to cut Akron's lead to 5-3.
The Zips scored the last three goals of the half to stretch their lead to 8-3 at intermission.
Akron scored the first six goals of the second period, including four by Kiefer, to blow the game open with a 14-3 lead.
Gentle scored her two goals after the break. Her second score cut Akron's lead to 15-5 with 13:15 left to play.
The Zips outshot the Hornets 48-12 in the contest.
Delaware State goal keeper
Moe Brown was credited with 14 saves in the game.
The Hornets will return to action on Mar. 18 for their home opener against Longwood.
