Hornets Fall in the NEC Opener at Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Despite a gritty defensive effort in the middle periods, Delaware State dropped its conference opener on the road, falling 18-3 to Wagner College on Wednesday.

The Hornets now move to 0-2 on the season as they continue their early-season road stretch.

By the Numbers

  • Keenan Clark led the Hornets' offense with two goals, both coming on free-position attempts.

  • Ceanna McGirt recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

How It Happened

Wagner established control immediately, sparking an 8-0 run to open the game. Delaware State broke the scoring drought late in the first quarter when Keenan Clark converted a free position shot to make it 8-1.

The second quarter saw Wagner extend their lead further, but the Hornets showed resilience on the defensive end. Savanna Wise entered at goalie and recorded several key saves to slowing the Seahawks' momentum. Just before the halftime buzzer, Clark found the back of the net again on a man-up opportunity, sending the teams to the locker room with Wagner leading 12-2.

The Hornets' defense tightened in the third period, limiting Wagner to just three goals. London McFarlane provided a highlight for Delaware State, scooping up a ground ball after a Wagner turnover and firing it home to cut the deficit.

In the fourth quarter, the Hornets struggled to find the back of the net despite several shot attempts from Genesys Spann and Blake Tutman. Wagner added three more goals to seal the 18-3 victory.

Up Next
