John Weglarz (jr.) smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 4-4 tie in Delaware State's 6-4 win over Coppin State in the second game of a MEAC North seven-inning doubleheader at Soldier Field today. The Eagles won the opener 9-3.
Game two was tied at four when
Mason Brewer singled to lead off the DSU sixth. Pinch runner
Mike Worthington was on third base with two out when Weglarz launched his second homer of the season over the fence in right center for the go-ahead runs.
Hornet reliever
Chandler Fitzgerald allowed two men on base in the top of the inning, one reaching third, but recorded the final out on a fly to right field to earn his first victory of the season (1-0).
Fitzgerald entered the game with two outs in the top of the sixth after Coppin State tied the game earlier in the inning. He posted the final out in the sixth on a strikeout to prevent further damage by the Eagles.
The Hornets trailed 3-1 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead.
The big blow in the inning was a two-out, two-run single by
Tyler Cunningham to give DSU a 4-3 lead.
Weglarz singled in the first run of the inning, chasing home
Miguel Rivera, who doubled to lead off the third.
In the opener, catcher Mike Dorcean was three-for-four with four RBI to lead a 15-hit attack, while starter Mike Rea tossed a five-hit complete game, striking out nine to key the win lead the Eagles.
Coppin State led 6-2 when Dorcean hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning.
Trey Paige singled in a fourth-inning run and Rivera drove in a run on a sac fly in the bottom of the seventh for the Hornets.
The team will wrap up the series with another seven-inning doubleheader on Sunday at Soldier Field.
