Box Score Dover, Del. (Mar. 13, 2021) --- Mount St. Mary's led 6-0 after the first inning and held on for a 13-11 victory over Delaware State at Straw Family Stadium on Friday. The Hornets fought back to tie the game in the seventh before the Mount pulled ahead again for good.
The loss overshadowed a 14-hit, four-home run performance by the Hornets. The home runs, two by
Trey Paige, were the first for DSU this season. Cole Carey and
Mark Herron also went deep for the Hornets in the contest.
Mount St. Mary's started quickly, scoring six runs on five hits in the bottom of the first to take a 6-0 lead.
Delaware State got two runs back in the top of the second, scoring one on a bases loaded walk to
Miguel Rivera and the other on a passed ball.
The Hornets pulled to within 6-3 when Paige led off the top of the third with his, and Delaware State's, first home run of the season.
The Mount added two more runs in the fourth to stretch their lead to 8-3.
Delaware State cut the deficit to 8-4 when Paige hit his second homer of the game with two outs in the top of the fifth.
The Hornets trailed 9-4 when Herron led off the sixth with his first homer of the year. Delaware State added another run in the inning on a ground out by Rivera to pull to within 9-6.
Delaware State scored three runs in the seventh on wipe out the deficit.
Cole Garey led off the seventh with his first home run of the season to cut the Mount's lead to 9-7. After a run-scoring single by
Mike Worthington pulled the Hornets to within 9-8, Delaware State tied the game on a two-balk by Mount St. Mary's. DSU had runners at second and third when the inning ended.
The Mount responded with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to open up a 13-9 lead.
The Hornets scored two in the eighth inning on doubles by Tripp Kimmel and
Robert Trujillo. DSU again had two runners on base when the eighth inning ended and left 10 on for the game.
Delaware State outhit the Mount 14-13 in the game.
Trujillo had a team-high three hits, while Worthington, Herron, Paige, Garey and
John Weglarz recorded two each.
