Boiling Springs, N.C. (Mar. 6, 2019) --- Delaware State scored the first goal of the game before allowing the next 14 in a 19-2 loss to Gardner-Webb in a women's lacrosse contest on Wednesday.
Elish Gately and Abby Hanscom scored three goals each, while Jada Preston recorded two goals and eight assists for a game-high 10 points to lead the Bulldogs.
The Hornets got off a fast start when Tamrin Swann scored on a free position shot just 12 seconds into the contest.
Gardner Webb answered with a goal by Jessica Vetter 23 seconds later to tie the score. Preston scored back-to-back goals by the Bulldogs over the next three minutes to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.
Gardner than ran off 11 more goals in the first half, including three by Hanscom, to lead 14-1 at the break.
Delaware State broke the Bulldog's run on Aniya Aiken's first career goal just one-minute-25 seconds into the second period.
The Bulldogs scored the last five goals of the period to close out the scoring.
The Hornets were outshot 32-4 in the game, including 21-3 in the first period.
Delaware State wraps up this two-game road swing at Presbyterian on Friday. The match starts at 1:00 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.
The next DSU home contest is March 15 vs. Howard (1:00 p.m.).
