Dover, Del. (Apr. 6, 2016) --- La Salle took advantage of mistakes in a 4-2 win over Delaware State at Soldier Field today. The Hornets committed four errors and had two passed balls, resulting in each run by the Explorers recorded as unearned.
La Salle (9-21) scored first with a run off DSU starter Cole Davis in the top of the third inning. Davis walked Joey Ravert with two outs and the bases empty, and committed a fielding error to allow Ravert to advance to third. Justin Jacko followed with a single to left to score Ravert with the game's first run.
The Explorers tacked on two unearned runs off Hornet reliever Jaylen Zielecki in the fourth. Brian Tagoe singled with one out and moved to second on two-out passed ball. The next batter, Derek Prucnal, reached on an error by DSU third baseman Cameron Onderko, allowing Tagoe to score from second. Prucnal stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by Hornet catcher Evan Regez. Jared Melone followed with a single to score Prucnal, giving the Explorers a 3-0 lead.
Delaware State answered with a run off La Salle starter Greg Paprocki in the bottom of the fourth. Zielecki doubled with two outs, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single to left by Devin Beverly to cut the Explorers' lead to 3-1.
The Hornets (5-23) pulled closer with a run in the fifth. Regez reached base on a two-out bunt single and moved to second on a hit by Onderko. The next batter, Austin Bentley struck out swinging, but reached base when the ball got past La Salle catcher Brett Simon to load the bases. After Jorge Jimenez relieved Paprocki, he uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Regez to score to cut La Salle's lead to 3-2. Jimenez avoided further damage by striking out Zielecki to end the inning, stranding two runners in scoring position.
La Salle clung to the one-run lead until getting some insurance in the ninth. Prucnal doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a throwing error by Hornet reliever Hunter McVey.
Jake Bartlett drew a walk off La Salle closer Tom Fazzini to open the DSU ninth, but could not advance.
Delaware State pitchers struck out 12 La Salle batters, but the Hornets also fanned a dozen times in the contest.
