Dover, Del. (Apr. 3, 2016) ---Delaware State committed a seven-high errors, contributing to seven unearned runs, in a 14-5 loss to UMES in gusty conditions at Soldier Field today. The Hawks won two of the three games in the MEAC North series to improve to 7-19 overall and 3-5 in the MEAC. The Hornets fell to 5-22 and 5-3.
Justin Somerville was four-for-six with a run batted in, while Mike Escanilla three hits and three RBI in five at bats to lead the Hawks' 14-hit attack.
Conner Breslin had two hits and three runs batted in, and Jamsion Trower contributed three hits and a RBI for UMES.
Jaylen Zielecki (3-for-5) and Austin Bentley (2-for-5) knocked in two runs each for the Hornets.
UMES opened the scoring with five runs off Delaware State starter Darien Ragins in the top of the first inning. Breslin had a two-run double, while Trower singled in a run in the inning.
Bentley had a two-run single in the bottom of the first to cut the Hawks' lead to 5-2.
UMES tacked on three runs on two hits in the second to open up an 8-2 lead. The Hornets committed two errors in the inning, resulting in two unearned runs.
The Hornets pulled to within 8-4 on Zielecki's two-run double in the third.
The Hawks scored three runs in the fifth, two on a single by Escanilla, to stretch their lead to 11-4.
UMES led 12-5 before adding two unearned runs in the eighth.
Ragins (1-3) was the losing pitcher, while UMES starter Will Turley (3-1) threw five innings to earn the win.
The Hornets return to action on Wed. (Apr. 6) with a non-conference game at home against La Salle. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Soldier Field.
