TOWSON TOO MUCH FOR HORNETS IN MID-WEEK CONTEST
Towson, Md. (Apr. 27, 2016) --- Towson scored six runs in the first and eighth innings en route to an 18-4 win over Delaware State at Schuerholz Park today. Brady Policelli was three-for-four with a homer and five runs batted in, and A.J. Gallo had four hits and two RBI to lead the Tigers' 17-hit attack.
Kwestin Smith had two hits and a RBI, while Austin Bentley and Devin Beverly also drove in runs for the Hornets.
Delaware State (10-30) jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Evan Regez scored the first run on a wild pitch and Bentley's two-out single drove in Darnell Maisonet to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
Towson (15-27) answered with six runs in the bottom of the first off DSU starter Garrett Coverdale. The big blow in the inning was a three-run triple by Trey Martinez to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead.
The Hornets put two more runs on the board in the second to pull closer. Beverly doubled in Chris Panzarella with DSU's third run and Smith singled in Beverly with two outs to cut Towson's lead to 6-4.
Policelli's two-run single in the third gave the Tigers an 8-4 lead. He had a run-scoring triple in the fifth, which ended with Towson ahead 10-4.
Policelli drove in his fourth and fifth runs of the game on a homer in the seventh.
The Tigers blew the game open with six runs in the eighth.
Coverdale (1-3) took the loss for the Hornets, while Towson reliever Noah Hartwell (1-0) threw three scoreless innings to earn the win.
Delaware State returns to MEAC play with a three-game series at Norfolk State this weekend. The Hornets and Spartans are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday starting at noon.
Norfolk State leads the MEAC North with a (13-4) record, two-and-a-half games ahead of the second place Hornets (10-6)
