Dover, Del. (Apr. 26, 2016) --- Kevin Mohollen knocked in four runs, while Jordan Glover and Jeremy Ake drove in three each to lead Delaware to a 19-8 victory over Delaware State at Soldier Field today.
The Hens swept three games against the Hornets this season to raise their 2016 record to 25-16. DSU fell to 10-29.
Delaware pounded out 16 hits, including six for extra bases. The Hens scored in five of their nine at bats, highlighted by seven runs in the second inning, five in the seventh and four in the ninth.
Freshman catcher Evan Regez was three-for-five with two runs scored, while rookie shortstop Chris Panzarella smacked his second home run of the season for the Hornets.
Delaware opened the scoring when Mohollen doubled off DSU starter Cole Davis to lead off the game and came home on Glover's two-out double in the top of the first inning.
The Hens added seven runs in the second to open up an 8-0 lead. Mohollen had a two-run double, while UD also scored on a Doug Trimble single and a sac fly by Ake in the inning. Two Delaware runs crossed the plate on Hornet errors in the second.
Delaware State had five errors in the contest.
The Hornets answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Cameron Onderko walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a groundout by Devin Beverly. Panzarella walked with two outs to put DSU runners at second and first. Regez followed with an infield single. Delaware starting pitcher Dan Belfer made a wild throw to first on the play, allowing Onderko to score the Hornets' first run. The next batter, freshman outfielder Todd Henry, singled to left field scoring Panzarella and Regez to cut Delaware's lead to 8-3.
Mohollen hit a two-run homer off Davis in the third to give the Hens a 10-3 lead.
The Hornets pulled to within 10-4 when Kwestin Smith singled in Jake Bartlett with two outs in the fourth.
Delaware State tacked on three runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to three. Panzarella homered to lead off the inning, while Hornets also scored on a wild pitch and ground out by Darnell Maisonet to trim the Hens' lead to 10-7.
Delaware scored five runs in the seventh, highlighted by Glover's two-run single, to open up a 15-7 lead.
The Hornets scored their final run of the game on back-to-back two-out doubles by Maisonet and Austin Bentley in the eighth.
The Hens closed out the scoring with four runs in the ninth. Ake singled in two runs and Trimble had a run-scoring hit in the inning.
Henry, Maisonet and Bentley had two hits each for Delaware State.
Six players had at least two hits for Delaware, highlighted by three each for Mohollen, Trimble and James Meeker.
Delaware reliever Matt Hornich (3-1) was the pitcher, while Davis (0-8) was tagged with the loss for the Hornets.
DSU is back in action tomorrow with a non-conference game at Towson. Game time is 3 p.m. in Towson, Md.
