Princess Anne, Md. (Apr. 24, 2016) --- Sean McGrath and Travis Dill combined for a two-hitter and Jake Bartlett drove in two runs to give Delaware State a 4-2 win in the nightcap to earn a split in a MEAC doubleheader with Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sunday.
The Hawks won the opener 4-3 in 11 innings.
McGrath allowed just one hit, while striking out four and walking one in five innings to post his team-high third win (3-4) on the season. Dill threw the last two innings, allowing a hit and one run, to earn his first save of the season.
UMES scored first in game two with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning.
The Hornets answered with two runs in the fourth. Darnell Maisonet walked to lead off the inning. He stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a wild pitch. Devin Beverly doubled with two outs in the inning and crossed the plate when Bartlett followed with a double to left to give DSU a 2-1 lead.
Delaware State added two runs in the sixth to open up a 4-1 lead. Bartlett doubled in his second run of the game in the inning and the other run scored on a wild pitch.
Bartlett had two of the DSU's seven hits in the nightcap.
McGrath has 31 strikeouts in his last 22 innings pitched.
In the opener, Zach Mills singled in Jessey Valdez with the game-winning run off Maisonet with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Hawks to the victory.
Delaware State led 3-1 after four innings, but was scoreless in the final frames.
The Hornets opened the game one scoring with a run in the top of the second inning. Catcher Evan Regez singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a one-out error by the Hawks. Regez had three of DSU's nine hits in the game (3-for-6).
UMES scored a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game.
The Hornets took the lead again with two runs in the fourth. Todd Henry drew a bases loaded walk to produce the first run of the inning and the second run scored on a sac fly by Kwestin Smith.
UMES shortstop Jordan Martin singled in two runs in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.
The Hornets had late-game scoring chances, but stranded two runners on base in the ninth, 10th and 11th innings.
DSU left a season-high 16 runners on base in the opener.
The Hornets and Hawks were scheduled to play three games this weekend, but were unable to get the third game in due to Saturday's rainout. No make-up date has been set.
The doubleheader split gives Delaware State a 10-6 record in the MEAC North, two games behind first place Norfolk State (12-4). The Hornets have four games left with Norfolk State this season.
Delaware State returns to action with a home game on Tuesday (Apr. 26) against Delaware. The contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Soldier Field.
DSU Athletics Hall-of-Famer Charlie Emerson, a former Hornet baseball standout, is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game.
