BSB: HORNETS SWEEP TWIN-BILL FROM EAGLES; IMPROVE TO 4-1 IN MEAC

Glen Burnie, Md. (Mar. 26, 2016) ----Delaware State combined for 29 runs and 22 hits in a double-header sweep of MEAC North rival Coppin State at Joe Cannon Stadium today. The Hornets won the first game 14-6 and completed the sweep with a 15-5 victory in the seven-inning nightcap. DSU took the series two-games-to-one to improve to 4-1 in division play this season.

In the opener, freshman third baseman Todd Henry was three-for-five with six runs batted in to lead the Hornets' 13 hit attack.

Zaylen Zielecki smacked his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, and Evan Regez drove in two runs for DSU.

Delaware State led 8-6 before scoring six runs in the ninth to blow the game open.

Henry doubled in the game's first run in the third inning and singled in two in the Hornets' three-run fourth.

Delaware State was ahead 4-2 before tacking on three more runs in the seventh to open up a 7-2 lead. Henry drove in his fourth run of the game on a sac fly in the sixth.

Coppin State scored a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to cut the Hornets' lead to 7-6.

The Hornets opened up an 8-6 lead when a run scored on a wild pitch in eighth.

Zielecki's ninth-inning homer stretched the lead to 10-6. Henry knocked in his fifth and sixth runs of the game on a two-run single, while Regez and Austin Bentley also drove in the runs in the frame.

Zielecki, Chris Panzarella and Rich Rountree had two hits each in game one for the Hornets.

Delaware State starter Sean McGrath (1-3) picked up his first career win in the contest.

In the nightcap, Bentley was two-for-four with five RBI, highlighted by a grand slam, and Kwestin Smith knocked in four runs to lead the Hornets.

Delaware State opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Bentley drove in the first run on a one-out single.

After Coppin State scored a run on the bottom of the first, the Hornets added four in the second to open up a 6-1 lead. Adrian Hill singled in a run and Smith brought in a run on a groundout in the inning. Delaware State also scored second inning runs on a successful double steal and a passed ball.       

The Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to cut the Hornets' lead to 6-4.

DSU led 7-4 when Bentley smacked his first career grand slam in the fourth to give the Hornets a seven-run lead. Darnel Maisonet, Henry and Hill scored ahead of Bentley, who has jumped to the team RBI lead with 10 this season.

The Hornets added four runs in the fifth to take a 15-4 lead. Rountree hit his first career homer, a two-run shot, and Smith singled in two to account for the scoring in the inning.

Bentley is nine-for-22 (.409) with nine RBI in the Hornets' five MEAC games this season.

Delaware State begins a 13-game homestand on Tues. (Mar. 29) against Towson. Game time is 3 p.m. at Soldier Field. The Hornets will host Rider on Wed. in a 3 p.m. contest before returning to MEAC action against UMES at home next weekend.
