LAX: HASSAN, YURKANIN LEAD HORNETS PAST RADFORD FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

Dover, Del.  (Feb. 27, 2016) --- Juniors Iman Hassan and Kayla Yurkanin scored five goals each to lead Delaware State to an 18-14 women's lacrosse victory over Radford at Alumni Stadium today.  The 18 goals tied the Hornets' single-game record, first set on April 8, 2015 in a win over District of Columbia (18-4).

Hassan also tallied two assists to give her seven points in the game, tying the school record. Yurkanin had one assist for a career-high six points in the contest.

The DSU individual record for goals in a game is six.

The win is the first of the season for the Hornets (1-3), while Radford fell to 0-3 in its first year as a team

Delaware State starting quickly as Nicole McCombs, Yurkanin and Hassan scored in the first 5:10 of the game to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead.

After Radford scored its first goal with 23:38 left in the first period, McCombs notched her second goal and assisted on a score by Kiana Dawson to give DSU a 5-1 advantage.

The Hornets led 5-2 when Yurkanin, Olivia Summerville and Hassan scored consecutive goals to stretch the lead to six (8-2).

Yurkanin posted back-to-back scores, the second at the 11:29 mark of the first half, to give Delaware State a 10-3 lead.

McCombs scored her third goal of the game, but Radford tallied three of the last four in the period to cut the Hornets' lead to 11-5 at the half.

After the Highlanders scored the first goal of the second period, the Hornets scored the next five to open up a 16-6 lead. Hassan tallied her third and fourth goals of the game and Yurkanin collected her fifth of the contest during the rally. Dawson and Lauren Perry also found the net during the DSU spurt.

Radford responded with a four-goal run, including two by Juliette Ruland to cut the Hornets' lead to 16-10. Ruland and Gracie Peterson led the Highlanders with four goals each.

Delaware State answered by scoring the next two goals, including Hassan's fifth of the game, to stretch its lead to 18-10.

Radford closed out the scoring with four goals in the last 4:40 of the game.

McCombs had three goals and four points for DSU. Perry and Dawson tallied two scores each.

Hassan, who scored four times in the Hornets' season-opener at Presbyterian, leads the team with 11 goals and 17 points. Yurnanin is second on the squad in goals (8) and points (11), while McCombs and Summerville are tied for third with eight points each.  

The Hornets will return to action on Thursday (Mar. 3) at Howard. Game time is 4 p.m. in Washington, D.C. Delaware State will be trying for its second straight win over the Bison after a 17-15 victory in the 2015 meeting between the teams.
