BSB: HORNETS BLANKED AT GEORGE WASHINGTON

Arlington, Va. (Feb. 23, 2016) --- Delaware State's early season offensive struggles continued today in an 8-0 loss to George Washington in the Colonials' 2016 home opener at Tucker Field today. GW starter Shane Sweeney threw  five shutout innings, allowing just two singles while striking out nine, to earn the win. The Hornets were held to four singles in the contest.

Three Colonial relievers combined to allow two singles and strike out six in four innings.

George Washington (2-2) opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning off DSU starter Cole Davis.  The Colonials added four runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Bobby Campbell led George Washington's 12-hit attack with two hits, both doubles, and three runs batted in. Campbell doubled in a run in the first and doubled in two more in the sixth.

Davis (0-1) allowed six hits and two runs, while striking out three and walking two, over 3.2 innings in his first collegiate start.

Darnell Maisonet, Jaylen Zielecki, Todd Henry and Adrian Hill each singled in the game for the Hornets. Zielecki has one hit in each of the Hornets' five games this season.

Hornet reliever Terry Godfrey struck out two batters in 1.1 scoreless innings in the contest. Godfrey tossed a nine-inning shutout against George Washington as a freshman last season.   

The Hornets (0-5) return to action this Saturday (Feb. 27) with a doubleheader against Fairfield in Thomasville, N.C. Game one is scheduled to begin at noon. The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
