Boiling Springs, N.C. (Feb. 2016) --- Delaware State was held to 12 singles over 16 innings in a double-header loss Gardner-Webb today. The Bulldogs won the first game 9-0 and completed the sweep with an 8-0, seven-inning victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, three Gardner-Webb pitchers scattered eight singles in the combined shutout.
Second baseman Kwestin Smith had three of DSU's hits.
The Bulldogs scored single runs in the second through sixth innings to take a 5-0 lead. Gardner-Webb's Danny Sullivan started the scoring with a home run to lead off the second inning.
The Bulldogs scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to break the game open.
Blair Huggins had three hits and a RBI, while three players had two hits each for GWU.
DSU starter Travis Dill allowed four hits and two runs in 3.1 innings, striking out one and walking four, to suffer the loss in his 2016 debut.
Bulldog starter Jeremey Walker was the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing five hits and striking out five in seven innings.
In the nightcap, Gardner Webb scored three runs in the first and fourth innings, and Andrew Massey threw six shutout frames in the win.
Collin Thacker hit a three-run homer off Delaware State starter Sean McGrath to highlight the Bulldogs' first-inning scoring.
GWU scored three more in the fourth to open up a 7-0 lead. Paul Trick's two-run single was the big blow in the inning.
Darnell Maisonet-Velez and Jaylen Zielecki each had hits in game two for the Hornets. Each has a hit in all three DSU games this season.
The Hornets (3-0) will try to avoid a four-game sweep when they wrap up the series with a single game against the Bulldogs on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
