Princess Anne, Md.  (Sep. 6, 2015) --- Nevershi Ellis and Jasmine Jackson each had double figures in kills and digs to help lead Delaware State to a 3-1 victory over Quinnipiac in the UMES Courtyard Volleyball Classic this weekend. The scores were 25-22, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-18. The Hornets won two of three matches in the tournament to improve to 2-5 this season, topping their win total for all of last year.
Ellis collected 14 kills and 15 digs, while Jackson added 14 kills and 10 digs to record her fourth double-double of the season vs. the Bobcats.
Delaware State's Alliyah McBean had a match-high 22 digs and Hornet freshman setter Marisol Arredondo led all players with 35 assists.
DSU also recorded 14 blocks in the contest, led by Jae Jackson's five (one solo).
The first set featured nine ties, the last at 18-18 after a Quinnipiac error. The Hornets led 23-22 before winning the set on consecutive kills by Arredondo and Jae Jackson.
In the second set, Delaware State trailed 16-14 before taking control. The Hornets scored the next seven points, and opened up a 21-16 lead after consecutive kills by Jasmine Jackson.
DSU won the set on a kill by Ellis.
Quinnipiac led by as many as seven points in the third set. Delaware State pulled to within 24-21, but the Bobcats held on to stay alive in the match.
The Hornets took control of the fourth set after a Quinnipiac point forced the seventh tie at 14-14.
Delaware State capped off an 8-3 run on an ace by Ellis to open up a 22-17 lead. Â DSU scored three of the last four points, and secured the set and match win on a kill by Jenessa Helu.
The Hornets had a .148 hitting percentage in the match, collecting 53 kills and 29 errors on 162 attacks. Quinnipiac posted a .113 attack percentage (40/24/141).
Earlier Saturday, Delaware State fell to host UMES 3-0. The Hawks won by 25-15, 25-19 and 25-17 scores.
The Hornets return to action on Wednesday (Sep. 9) at La Salle. The match begins at 7 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
DSU will play its home opener on Oct. 9 against MEAC rival Coppin State. The Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness contest is set for 7 p.m. in DSUs Memorial Hall.
