Dover, Del. (May 3, 2015) --- David Kimbrough drew a bases loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Delaware State to a 5-4 MEAC North win over UMES in the Hornets' regular season finale at Soldier Field today.
DSU led 4-2 entering the ninth inning, but UMES scored two runs off the Hornet bullpen in the top of the inning to tie the game. Greg Turlik homered with one out for the first in the ninth and Conner Breslin singled in the tying run for the Hawks.
Jaylen Zielecki drew a walk from UMES reliever Devin Repine to lead off the Delaware State ninth. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Torres and moved to third on a ground out by Sam Barber. Repine then walked Devin Beverly and issued an intentional pass to Charles Dailey to load the bases for Kimbrough. Repine's 3-2 pitch to Kimbrough was high and inside, forcing in Zielecki with the winning run.
Zielecki, the starting pitcher and designated hitter for the Hornets, smacked a towering two-run homer in the seventh to give DSU a 3-2 lead. It was his second homer in the series and fifth of the season.
The Hornets added a run in the eighth on a double by Cameron Onderko to open up a 4-2 lead.
DSU scored first when Justin Allen hit a solo homer over the scoreboard with two outs in the fourth inning.
Zielecki retired the first 15 UMES batters before Quenton Hamrick doubled to lead off the sixth inning. He struck out a career high 12 batters before being relieved with one out in the seventh. He struck out the side in the second inning and fanned two in the first, third and fourth.
Hamrick scored the Hawks' first run in the sixth and UMES added a run in the seventh to take a 2-1 lead.
Darrien Ragins (1-1), the fourth DSU pitcher in the game, retired the last two batters in the ninth to earn his first career win. Repine (0-2) suffered the loss for the Hawks.
DSU won two of the three games in the weekend series to end the regular season with a 14-27 overall record and 13-11 mark in the MEAC. The Hawks fell to 16-30 and 14-10.
The Hornets will return to action in the 2015 MEAC Tournament May 13 to 18 at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury. Md.
