Norfolk, Va. (Apr. 3, 2015) --- Norfolk State scored all of its runs in the first four innings and Matt Outman allowed three hits and struck out 11 in the Spartans' 21-0 win over Delaware State in the first of a three-game MEAC North series at Marty Miller Field today. The game was called after the Hornets batted in the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule.
Norfolk State pounded out 22 hits in the contest. Roger Hall was four-for-four with six runs batted in, Denathan Duke collected four hits in five at bats; and Kyle Vaas had a homer and three RBI to lead the Spartans, who won their fourth straight game to improve to 10-10 overall and 7-3 in the MEAC.
Outman (4-1) scattered singles to DSU's David Kimbrough, Ron Farley and Austin Bentley in the contest.
Norfolk State opened the scoring with a run in the first on a single by Hall.
The Spartans blew the game open with 10 runs in the second to open up an 11-0 lead. NSU had nine hits and was aided by three Delaware State errors in the inning. Hall had a three-run triple and Vaas doubled in a run in the second.
The Spartans added six runs on six hits in the third to stretch their lead to 17-0. Vaas smacked a two-run homer in the inning, while Hall and Dukes had run-scoring singles in the inning.
Norfolk State closed out the scoring with four runs in the fourth inning.
Terry Godfrey (1-2), the first of four DSU pitchers, took the loss. One bright spot for the Hornets was the performance of reliever Hunter McVey, who did not allow a hit and struck out four without a walk in 2.2 innings.
Delaware State dropped its fifth straight game to fall to 6-17 and 5-5 in conference play.
The Hornets and Spartans will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one gets underway at 12 p.m.
