Hanover, Md. (Apr. 26, 2015) --- Jaylen Zielecki allowed just two hits in six shutout innings and Charles Dailey drove in three runs to lead Delaware State to a 12-0 victory over Coppin State in a MEAC North contest at Joe Cannon Stadium today.
The Hornets swept the three-game series to improve to 12-25 overall and 11-10 in the MEAC. DSU outscored the Eagles 43-5 in the series.
Zielecki (3-2) did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the Coppin State sixth. He struck out six and walked two to win his second straight decision. Hunter McVey did not allow a hit in the CSU seventh to complete the Hornets' second shutout of the series.
The game was called after the Eagles batted in the seventh due to the 10-run rule.
Dailey was three-for-five with a double and three runs batted in to lead DSU's 13-hit attack. Devin Beverly had three hits and a RBI in four at bats, while David Kimbrough and Chris Gonzalez drove in two runs each for the Hornets.
DSU started quickly with two runs in the top of the first inning. Dailey walked and Kimbrough singled to lead off the game, giving the Hornets runners at second and first. After the runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Cameron Onderko, Gonzalez followed with a single to right to score Dailey and Kimbrough with the game's first two runs.
The Hornets added three runs in the second to open up a 5-0 lead. Dailey doubled in a run and Kimbrough drove in the second run of the inning on a sacrifice bunt. Onderko also had a run-scoring single in the second.
DSU opened up a 7-0 lead after adding two runs in the third. Dailey had his second RBI of the game on a one-out single in the inning.
Dailey, Kimbrough and Beverly each had RBI singles in the Hornets' four-run fourth inning. Kimbrough's hit gave the Hornets an 11-0 lead.
DSU's Justin Allen singled in a run in the sixth to close out the scoring.
The Hornets will return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference game at Towson. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Delaware State will close out the 2015 regular season with a three-game series at home against UMES next weekend. The Hornets and Eagles will play a doubleheader next Saturday beginning at noon; and wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
