Glen Burnie, Md. (Apr. 12, 2015) ---Charles Dailey had two hits and four runs batted in to lead Delaware State to a come-from-behind 6-3 win over Coppin State in a MEAC series finale at Joe Cannon Stadium today. The Hornets took two of the three games in the series to improve to 8-21 overall and 7-8 in the MEAC. The Eagles fell to 3-25-1 and 2-13.
Coppin State opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. Colin Dower singled off Hornet starter Jaylen Zielecki to lead off the game for the Eagles. Jack Kraft followed with a double to score Dower with the game's first run.
The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the second to take a 3-0 lead. William Brown and Alejandro Hernandez singled in CSU's second inning runs.
DSU got on the board in the third inning. Dailey doubled with one out, but was erased at third on a fielder's choice by David Kimbrough. After Kimbrough stole second, Cameron Onderko singled to center to drive in Kimbrough to cut's Coppin State's lead to 3-1.
The Hornets scored three times in the fourth to take the lead. Austin Bentley started the rally with a one-out single. Jake Bartlett followed with a single to put runners at second and first. The next batter, Sam Barber, reached on an error to load the bases. Dailey followed with a double to left, scoring all three runners to give DSU a 4-3 lead.
The Hornets added a run in the sixth to go ahead by two. Ron Farley singled to lead off the inning; and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Farley was at third base when Dailey reached on a fielder's choice to drive in DSU's fifth run.
Farley also helped the Hornets score an insurance run in the eighth. He singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Bartlett to stretch the lead to 6-3.
Zielecki was the winning pitcher (2-2) for the Hornets. He allowed six hits and three runs, while striking out four and walking three in 6.2 innings. Gabe Rivera pitched 2.1 innings of relief to earn his first career save. Rivera did not allow a hit, while striking out two after entering the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Farley and Bentley each chipped in two hits for the Hornets.
Coppin State starter Jhar Devilme (0-3) was the losing pitcher.
Delaware State returns to action on Wednesday (Apr. 15) with a home game against Navy. Start time is 3 p.m. at Soldier Field.
