HORNETS END SKID IN GAME ONE; DROP NIGHTCAP AT COPPIN STATE

Glen Burnie, Md. (Apr. 11, 2015) --- Delaware State ended an eight-game losing streak with an 11-5 victory in the opener , but dropped game two 5-4 in a MEAC doubleheader at Coppin State today.

In the seven-inning nightcap, the Eagles scored the go-ahead run on a solo homer by Jack Kraft in the bottom of the sixth inning after the Hornets scored three in the top of the sixth to tie the game.       

In the opener, the Hornets opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. The rally began with the bases empty and two outs when Cameron Onderko drew a walk and Chris Gonzalez followed with a single. Onderko advanced to third on an error; and Gonzalez moved up to second on a wild pitch. The next batter, Ron Farley, reached base on an infield single to score Onderko. Justin Allen followed with a single to score Gonzalez and give DSU a 2-0 lead.

The Hornets added a run in the second to open up a 3-0 lead. Charles Dailey drew a two-out walk and raced home when David Kimbrough followed with a double.

DSU stretched its lead to 5-0 when Onderko knocked in two runs on a bases loaded single in the fourth inning.

Coppin State answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Hornets' lead to 5-1.

Delaware State got that run back in the fifth on a two-out single Jaylen Zielecki.

The Eagles scored twice in the seventh inning to cut the Hornets' lead to 6-3.

The Hornets gave themselves some breathing room with four runs in the eighth. The rally began when Zielecki reached second base on an error with one out.  The next batter, Sam Barber, was hit by a pitch and Dailey walked to load the bases. Kimbrough followed with an infield single to score Zielecki,  giving the Hornets a 7-3 lead. Onderko was at the plate when Barber scored on a wild pitch to put DSU ahead 8-3. Gonzalez drove in Dailey from third and Kimbrough from second on a long fly ball to stretch the lead to 10-3.

Delaware State scored its final runs in the ninth when Austin Bentley singled with two outs, stole second; and scored on a single to right field by Barber.  

Kimbrough, Gonzalez and Allen had two hits each to lead the Hornets' 12-hit attack. Kimbrough and Onderko each had two runs batted in.  

Starter Lane DeLeon (3-3) was the winning pitcher for DSU. He allowed three hits and one unearned run, while striking out five and walking four in five innings.      

In the nightcap. Coppin State scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added a run in the second to take a 3-0 lead.

The Hornets got a run back in the third when Zielecki walked to lead off the inning. He stole second and later scored on a single by Devin Beverly.

The Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the third to open up a 4-1 lead.

Delaware State battled back with three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game. Farley and Bentley drew walks to lead off the inning. After the next two batters struck out, Beverly was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dailey chased Farley and Bentley home with a single to left to cut Coppin State's lead to 4-3. After Kimbrough followed with an infield single to load the bases, Beverly scored on a passed ball to tie the game.  The Hornets had the bases loaded when Gonzalez struck out to end the inning.

With one out In the Coppin State sixth, Kraft drove a pitch from Hornet reliever Terry Godfrey over the fence in left field to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead.

Coppin State reliever Chris Estrada set the Hornets down  1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Kimbrough was two-for-four in game two to give him four hits in the doubleheader.  

The Hornets are now 7-21 overall and 6-8 in the MEAC,  while Coppin State is 3-24-1 and 2-12 in league play.

The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
