MISSED OPPORTUNITIES DOOM HORNETS IN LOSS TO RIDER

Lawrence Twp., N.J. (Apr. 1, 2015) ---Delaware State left 12 men on base in a 5-1 non-conference loss to Rider at Sonny Pittaro Field today. The Hornets collected five hits, including the only three for extra bases, but stranded two runners in five innings in the contest.

Rider scattered seven singles off seven DSU pitchers.

The Broncs opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second on a two-out single by Eric Strano off Hornet starter Terry Godfrey.

Rider stretched its lead to 2-0 when Patrick Murphy walked to lead off the fourth and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Hornet reliever Tyler Cullen. Murphy scored on a ground out by Mike Parson.

The Hornets got on the board in the sixth when Ron Farley homered over the fence in left center, his team-leading sixth of the season. Farley has homered in each of the last two games; and is the first Hornet to go deep on the road this season.

The Broncs answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, and added two in the seventh to open up a 5-1 lead.

Delaware State left two men on base in the third, fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth innings. The Hornets had   runners on second and third with none out in the fourth;  and Jaylen Zielecki had a two-out triple in the sixth, but failed to score each time.

DSU put its first two men on in the ninth, but couldn't take advantage.

Godfrey (1-1) took the loss for the Hornets, while C.J. Hirschy (1-0), the second of seven Rider pitchers, was credited with the win.

The Hornets have dropped their fourth straight game to all to 6-16 this season. The Broncs improved to 6-14.

Delaware State returns to MEAC North action with a three-game series at Norfolk State, beginning with a single game on Fri. (Apr. 3) at 5 p.m. The Hornets and Spartans will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
