Annapolis, Md. (Mar. 4, 2015) --- Navy scored seven unanswered runs after Delaware State tied the game in the fifth inning en route to a 10-3 win over the Hornets at Max Bishop Stadium this afternoon.
The Midshipmen won for the second time in three games to improve to 7-4 this season. The Hornets, playing their first game since Feb. 22, fell to 0-8.
Sean Trent had three hits and three runs batted in; and Robert Currie was two-for-four with three RBI to lead Navy's 11 hit attack.
Delaware State had 10 hits, with Charles Dailey, David Kimbrough and Jaylen Zielecki collecting two each. Zielecki drove in two runs and Kimbrough the other for the Hornets.
Navy opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the third inning off DSU starter Lane DeLeon. The big blow in the inning was a two-run triple by Trent; and Currie singled in the other run.
Delaware State answered with two runs in the top of the fourth to pull to within a run. Kimbrough singled to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Chris Gonzalez singled, putting the runners on second and first. Tyler Ramsey followed with a single to load the bases with one out. Zielecki then singled to center to drive home Kimbrough and Gonzalez to cut the Midshipmen's lead to 3-2.
Navy reliever Jett Meenach entered the game; and struck out the next two batters to prevent further damage by the Hornets.
DSU tied the score in the top of the fifth when Dailey triple with one out, and crossed the plate when Kimbrough singled to right field for his second hit of the game.
Navy regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Brad Borosak doubled with one out, advanced to third on a wild pitch; and scored on a ground out.
The Midshipmen added a run in the sixth and five in the seventh to close out the scoring. Ben McGrath had a two-run double and Travis Blue singled in two runs in the Navy seventh.
Meenach (3-0) allowed a run and two hits, while striking out four in 2.2 innings, to earn the win for Navy.
Reliever Zach Cooney (0-1) suffered the loss for the Hornets.
Gonzalez was one-for-four to raise his team-leading average to .414. Kimbrough's two hits upped his average to .323.
Bobby Brown struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief for the Hornets.
The Hornets are scheduled to play their 2015 home opener this Saturday (Mar. 7) with a doubleheader against NJIT. Game one begins at 12 p.m. The teams are also scheduled for a twin-bill on Sunday at Soldier Field.
