HORNET FRESHMAN FANS 14 IN LOSS TO HAWKS

Dover, Del. (Mar. 29, 2015) --- A 14-strikeout performance by Delaware State freshman Lane DeLeon was spoiled by two UMES homers in the Hawks 4-2 victory over the Hornets at Soldier Field today.

Justin Dattillo hit a two-run homer off DeLeon (2-2) in the top of the sixth inning to give the Hawks the lead for good. UMES added a run in the top of the ninth to open up a 4-1 lead.

The Hornets scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out single by Ron Farley. DSU had the potential tying run at the plate when the game ended.

The Hornets scored first on Charles Dailey's solo homer off UMES starter Jesse Stinnett with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. Dailey is tied for the team lead with our home runs this season.

UMES tied the game when second baseman Mike Escanilla smacked a solo shot off DeLeon over the fence in left center to lead off the fourth inning.

DeLeon's 14 strikeouts were the most by a Hornet since Eric Gass fanned 14 in the 1989 MEAC championship game. DeLeon has struck out 26 batters in his last two outings (14.2 innings).

He struck out the side in the second inning, and fanned two in the first, third, fifth, seventh and eighth innings.  DeLeon was relieved after giving up a leadoff double in the ninth.

Stinnett (2-4) allowed just three hits, while striking out nine and walking one in eight innings to earn the win for the Hawks. He retired 11 straight DSU batters from the fourth to the eighth inning.

Devin Repine pitched the ninth inning for the Hawks. He allowed a run on two hits, but was credited with the save.

Dailey had two of the Hornets' five hits and scored both DSU runs. He's second on the team with a .370 average this season.

Escanilla had two of the Hawks' five hits.

The Hornets and Hawks are tied for first in the MEAC North at 5-2. DSU fell to 6-13 overall, while UMES improved to 7-16 on the season.

The teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Monday. Game one begins at noon at Soldier Field.
