Dover, Del. (Feb. 17, 2015) ---The Delaware State University women's lacrosse team will open its third season with a three-game road swing beginning Wednesday evening (7 p.m.) at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla.
The Hornets have raised hopes for the 2015 season with the return of 11 letterwinners from last year's squad, including five who have been with the program since it began in 2013.
Topping the list of returning players is sophomore attacker Emily Etkins (Havre de Grace, Md.), who set team records with 20 goals and 24 points (.526 shot pct.) in 2014.
Etkins had at least one goal in nine of the 10 games she played last season, including a school record-tying five at Presbyterian. She also had four goals in a game.
Attackers Megan Card (so; Magnolia, Del.) and Kayla Yurkanin (so.; Louisville, Ky.) also return.
Card was third on the Hornets with eight goals and 13 points, while Yurkanin was tied for fourth on the team in goals (6) and was fifth in points (15) last season.
Veterans Brionna Watkins (so.; Ridgley, Md.), Sierra Harris (sr.; Wilmington, Del.), Miranda Hawkins (jr.; Dover, Del.); and Montaiju Galmore (so.; Belcamp, Md.) each had multiple goals for the Hornets in 2014.
DSU also features experience between the pipes in third year goal keeper Rhian Sellers (jr.; Glen Burnie, Md.).
The Hornets' 2015 newcomers include attacker Iman Hassan (so; Whitby, Ont.), who scored two goals in the team's preseason exhibition win over Howard CC (Md.)
Mid-fielder Lauren Perry (fr.; Pennsauken, N.J) and defender Crystal Founder (fr.; Media, Pa.) are also new to the team this season.
Stetson, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, will be playing its second game of the season. The Hatters fell to Coastal Carolina 15-4 in their opener last Saturday. Stetson was 2-16 overall and 2-3 in conference games in 2014.
The Hornets will travel to Georgia for games at Mercer this Friday (Feb. 20) and Kennesaw State on Sunday (Feb. 22) before their home opener on Feb. 28 against Wilmington (Del.) University. The match gets underway at 11 a.m. at Alumni Stadium.
