Clinton, S.C. (Feb. 12, 2015) --- Delaware State gave up four runs in the first inning and never recovered in a 13-6 loss to Presbyterian in the season opener for both teams today.
Outfielder Weston Jackson was two-for-four with four RBI and three players drove in two runs each to lead Presbyterian's 14-hit attack. The Hornets collected seven hits in the contest.
After DSU went down in order in the top of the first, Presbyterian scored four times in the bottom of the inning off Hornet starter Dan Galati. The big blow was a two-run homer by Jackson.
The Hornets answered with two runs in the top of the second to cut Presbyterian's lead in half.
Ron Farley singled to lead off the inning, and Justin Allen followed with a triple to right center to score Farley with DSU's first run of the season. Allen later crossed the plate on a groundout by Chris Gonzalez to trim PU's lead to 4-2.
Presbyterian scored a run in the bottom of the second on a DSU throwing error to stretch its lead to 5-2.
The Hornets put another run on the board in the third inning to trail by two again. David Kimbrough reached base on a one-out error and moved to second when Charles Dailey followed with a single. DSU loaded the bases when the next batter, Cameron Onderko, drew a walk. Kimbrough scored the Hornets' third run of the game when Farley reached on a fielder's choice groundout to short.
Jackson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to stretch Presbyterian's lead to 7-3.
The Blue Hose added two runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth; and three more in the sixth off the Hornets' bullpen to open up a 13-3 lead.
Delaware State closed out the scoring with three runs in the eighth.
Kimbrough singled to lead off the inning. He moved to second when Dailey reached on an error; and advanced to third on a fielder's choice groundout. Newcomer Austin Bentley, pinch hitting for Farley, followed with a sacrifice fly to score Kimbrough, cutting PU's lead to 13-4. Gonzalez singled later in the inning to put runners at second and third with two out. Those runners scored on an error for DSU's fifth and sixth runs of the game.
Galati (0-1) allowed seven hits and seven runs in three innings to take the loss. Hornet freshmen relievers Tommy Spagnolo and Hunter McVey combined for 2.2 shutout innings in the game. Spagnolo did not allow a hit and struck out two in 1.2 innings, while McVey gave up two hits and fanned one.
Starter Beau Dees (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Presbyterian. He allowed five hits and three runs-two earned-while striking out six and walking one in six innings.
Allen's triple was the only extra base hit of the game for the Hornets.
Cam McRae had three hits and two RBI; and Tyler Weyenberg also had three hits for the Blue Hose.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.; and wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday.
