HORNETS UPENDED BY UMES 3-0 IN MEAC CONTEST

Dover, Del. (Nov. 8, 2015) --- Petra Jerabkova had 33 assists, 14 digs and six aces to lead Maryland-Eastern Shore to a 3-0 win over Delaware State in a MEAC volleyball contest in Memorial Hall today.

The scores were 25-18, 25-19 and 25-17.

Jasmine Jackson topped the Hornets with 10 kills and added 10 digs. She has reached double figures in kills and digs in 12 matches this season, including the last three.

Alliyah McBean led DSU with 15 digs to share the match high.

In the first set, UMES opened up a 19-9 lead after a Delaware State error. The Hornets scored six of the next eight points, and pulled to within 21-15 on an error by the Hawks. DSU could get no closer the rest of the set.

The teams were tied 7-7 in the second set before UMES pulled away. The Hawks opened up their biggest lead, 23-12, on a kill by Alana Polk.

The Hornets showed some late spark, scoring seven straight points to pull to within four. Jenessa Helu had back-to-back kills and Jackson recorded an ace to cut the Hawks' lead to 23-19. Helu had three kills during the DSU rally.

The third set was tied at 12-12 before UMES began to take control. The Hawks scored 13 of the final 18 points to claim the set and match.

Delaware State posted a .148 hitting percentage in the match, recording 27 kills and 14 errors on 88 attempts. UMES had a .255 attack percentage (40/15/98).

"I think we played well in spurts," said Delaware State head coach Whitney Johnson. "We need to work on being more consistent and we lacked discipline in some areas."

The Delaware State head coach also commented on Jackson's play in the contest.

"Jasmine means a lot for us. She kind of lacked in her serve receive and it got her a little  frustrated. When Jasmine isn't mentally frustrated, she's the best player on our team. So we need her to keep pushing herself in a positive way."

The Hawks improved to 20-6 overall and 8-3 in the MEAC, while the Hornets fell to 2-23 and 0-10.

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday (Nov. 11) at home against Norfolk State. The match begins at 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
