Baltimore, Md. (Oct. 30, 2015) --- The Delaware State volleyball team forced a fourth set after falling behind 2-0, but could not complete the comeback in a 3-1 MEAC loss to Coppin State this evening.
The Eagles (9-12; 6-4 MEAC) won the first two sets 25-15 and 25-14, but the Hornets stayed alive with a 26-24 victory in the third set. Â Coppin State clinched the match with a 25-15 win in the fourth set.
Cindy Okpegbue led the Eagles with 21 kills (.382 hitting percentage), while teammates Bailee Jackson and Samantha Polk tallied 18 and 11 winners, respectively.
Jasmine Jackson topped the Hornets with 14 kills and tied for the team lead with nine digs.
In the first set, Delaware State trailed 9-4 before scoring six of the next eight points to pull to within one. Jenessa Helu had two kills during the Hornet rally.
Coppin State answered with a 12-3 run to pull away in the opening set.
The second set was tied 4-4 before the Eagles took control.
Delaware State had to rally from behind to take the third set. Coppin State led 8-3 and 14-10 in the set before the Hornets fought back. Delaware State scored eight of 11 points midway through the set, and pulled ahead 18-17 on an error by the Eagles. The score was tied at 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23. A kill by Jackson gave the Hornets a 24-23 lead. Coppin State stayed alive in the set on a winner by Denali Sturgeon to force a 25-25 tie. Jae Jackson gave DSU a 25-24 lead on a kill and the Eagles committed an error on the next point to give the Hornets the set win, and cut CSU's lead to 2-1 in the match.
Delaware State (2-20; 0-7 MEAC) recorded 15 kills and committed just four errors on 27 attacks for a .407 hitting percentage in the third set.
Coppin State scored the first four points in the fourth set, and opened up a 7-2 lead on a DSU error. The Hornets could get no closer than three points the rest of the set.
The Eagles had 61 assists, including match-high 50 by Chelsee Sauni. Marisol Arredondo led the Hornets with 27 assists.
Coppin State recorded 48 digs. DSU had 32.
The Hornets return to action on Sunday (Nov. 1) with a MEAC home contest against Morgan State. The match begins at 2 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
