Dover, Del. (May 4, 2014) --- Coppin State starter Jhar Devilme kept Delaware State's explosive offense in check for much of the game to lead the Eagles to an 8-4 win over the Hornets in the series finale at Soldier Field today.
Coppin State avoided being swept in the three-game series, improving to 11-31 overall and 9-15 in the MEAC Northern Division. DSU, which clinched the 2014 Northern Division title on Saturday, fell to 26-15 and 15-7. The Hornets were 6-3 vs. the Eagles in the season series.
Devilme (3-4) allowed six hits and four runs, three earned, while striking out six in 8.1 innings to collect the win. He set down the Hornets in order on the first, seventh and eighth innings; and retired 10 consecutive batters at one stretch in the game.
The Hornets were averaging 8.7 runs per game entering the contest.
Coppin State opened the scoring with a run on a two-out single by John Walls in the top of the first inning.
The Eagles added three runs after two were out in the fourth inning off DSU starter George Michael to open up a 4-0 lead. Jeff Fitch had a two-run single and Michael Wright singled in the third run to account for the Coppin State scoring in the inning.
Delaware State committed two errors in the fifth inning, the second resulting in a run for the Eagles. Coppin State added a run in the sixth to open up a 6-0 lead.
The Hornets responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut CSU's lead in half. Aarron Nardone drew a one out walk to start the rally. He scored the Hornets' first run on an infield single by Ron Farley. Delaware State scored its second run of the inning on a Coppin State error and Chris Gonzalez drove in the third run on a ground out.
The Eagles put two runs on the board in the top of the ninth to open up an 8-3 lead.
Pinch hitter Eddie Sorondo singled in a ninth inning run for the Hornets to close out the scoring.
Coppin State outhit the Hornets 14-7 in the contest. Five players had at least two hits for the Eagles.
Charles Dailey had two of Delaware State's seven hits.
Michael (5-2) allowed nine hits and five runs (one earned) to take the loss.
The Hornets return to action with a doubleheader at UMES on Friday (May 9). Game one begins at 1 p.m. In Princess Anne, Md.
