Washington, D.C. (Apr. 3, 2014) --- The Delaware State University women's lacrosse team cut a five-goal deficit to one early in the second period, but ran out of gas in a 17-9 loss to Howard in the Hornets' 2014 finale at Greene Stadium today.
DSU trailed 3-0 and 6-1 in the first period before fighting back. Hornet freshman Emily Etkins scored the first goal of the second period to cut the Bison's lead to 7-6 with 28:04 left to play. Etkins had two goals and an assist in the contest to end the season with 20 goals and 24 points, each a school single-season record.
Howard responded with a three-goal run to open up a 10-6 lead.
After DSU's Miranda Hawkins scored at the 22:06 mark of the second period to cut Howard's lead to 10-7, the Bison answered with another three-goal spurt to build a six-goal advantage (13-7).
The Hornets kept their hopes alive when Kayla Yurkanin and Sierra Harris scored back-to-back goals to trim Howard's lead to 13-9.
The Bison scored the last four goals to seal the win.
Delaware State senior Emily Peets shined in her final collegiate contest, leading the Hornets with three goals and four points. Peets ended the season with 12 goals and 15 points to rank second on the team in each category. Her career totals include 20 goals and three assists. She is tied with Etkins for first place on the Hornets' all-time scoring list.
Tai Galmore tallied her second goal of the season for the Hornets.
Cynthia Smalls and Courtland Lackey scored six goals each to lead Howard's 40-shot attack.
Delaware State goal keeper Rhian Sellers recorded 15 saves to give her 104 for the season.
The Hornets end the program's second season with a 0-10 mark, while Howard notched its first win of the season to improve to 1-9.
Peets is the lone senior on the 2014 Hornets. Ten of the 11 DSU players who scored at least one goal this season are underclassmen.
Delaware State scored 64 goals in 10 games this season after tallying 29 in 11 contests in 2013. The Hornets also spent more time on the attack in their second season. DSU fired off 170 shots, including 125 on goal, this season.
In 2013, the Hornets managed just 96 shots, with 66 on goal.
