NAVY SAILS BY HORNETS 12-1

Annapolis, Md. (Mar. 20, 2014) --- Leland Saile had three hits and four runs batted in to lead Navy to a 12-1 win over Delaware State at Max Bishop Stadium today. Saile singled in a run in the Midshipmen's three-run fourth inning and doubled in three to highlight a seven-run sixth.

The Hornets scored their lone run in the seventh inning. Eddie Sorondo (one-for-three) drew a one-out walk in the inning. He advanced to second on a ground out by Hassan Evans and moved to third on a wild pitch. He came home on a two-out single to DJ Miller.

Navy opened the scoring with two unearned runs in the second inning. The Midshipmen scored three times in the fourth to open up a 5-0 lead; and blew the game open with the seven run explosion in the sixth.

DSU was held to four singles in the contest.

Kash Manzelli and Jack Keller had two RBI each for Navy.

Starter Mike McCormick (1-1) threw six scoreless innings to earn the win for the Middies. He allowed three hits, while striking out three and walking one.

Harry Thomas, the first of seven pitchers used by the Hornets, was tagged with the loss although he did not give up an earned run. Thomas allowed two hits and two unearned runs in three innings of work.  

Navy improved to 10-9 this season, while the Hornets fell to 10-6.

Delaware State will try to avenge today's loss to Navy when the teams meet again on Apr. 23 at DSU's Soldier Field (3 p.m.).

The Hornets return to action this weekend with a home MEAC North series against Coppin State. The series begins with a doubleheader on Sat. (Mar. 22)  at noon. The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
