Mar. 11, 2014) --- The Delaware State University baseball team pounded out 13 hits, including three home runs, but it was not enough in a 17-9 loss to the University of Pennsylvania in the second game of a doubleheader at Soldier Field today. The Quakers won the seven-inning opener 4-1 to sweep the twin-bill.
In the nightcap, Mike Alexander and Ron Farley hit two-run homers, while Aaron Nardone had a solo shot for the Hornets.
The Hornets trailed 12-0 when Alexander hit his second homer of the season in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Quakers' lead to 12-2.
Nardone hit his second home run of the season over the fence in right field in the Hornets' three-run seventh inning.
Farley's two-run shot was the highlight of DSU's four-run eighth. He was three-for-five in the nightcap, and four-of-seven in the doubleheader, to raise his average to .452.
Penn also hit three home runs in game two. Matt McKinnon had two hits, including a three-run homer, in the nightcap for the Quakers.
Penn's Jeff McGarry also had a three-run homer and Ryan Mincher hit a two-run shot in game two.
Delaware State pitcher surrendered 14 hits and walked 12 batters in the nightcap.
In the opener, McGarry hit a solo homer with two outs in the sixth to give the Quakers a 2-1 lead. Penn added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
The Hornets led 1-0 in the opener on a run-scoring single by Alexander in the bottom of the third inning.
Penn tied the game on a McGarry RBI single in the fourth.
Delaware State left 10 runners on base in the opener.
Alexander, Cameron Cecil and David Kimbrough had two hits each for the Hornets in game one.
DSU begins MEAC North play at Norfolk State this weekend. The Hornets are Spartans will play a doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 15) starting at 1 p.m.; and wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at noon.+
