HORNETS SET TEAM SCORING RECORD IN LOSS TO PRESBYTERIAN

Clinton, S.C. (Feb. 22, 2014) --- The Delaware State University women's lacrosse team had a record-setting scoring output, but it was not enough in a 22-16 loss to Presbyterian College today.

The 16 goals marked a team record for the two-year DSU program. The Hornets' previous high was 11 vs. Wilmington (Del.) last season.

Emily Etkins (fr.) and Emily Peets (jr.) had five goals each to set a single-game record for the Hornets. Megan Card (fr.) had four goals and three assists to set a school record with seven points in the contest.

Delaware State's previous records for goals (3) and points (5) in a game were set by Kiyanna Brown during the 2013 season.

The Hornets' six-goal margin of defeat at Presbyterian is also the lowest in the 13-game history of the team.

After Presbyterian jumped out to a 5-1 lead, the Hornets stormed back to tie the game. Delaware State scored four straight goals, three by Etkins, to even the contest. Her third goal of the game tied the score at 5-5 with 12:44 left in the first period.

The Blue Hose broke the DSU run with a score at 10:17 of the opening period to pull ahead 6-5.

The Hornets tied the game again when Peets scored her first goal of the game and season two minutes later.

Presbyterian scored six of the next seven goals to open up a 12-7 lead.

The Hornets closed out the first period on a high note, scoring two goals in the final minute to pull closer. Card scored her second goal of the game with 49 seconds left in the opening period and Etkins added a score 14 seconds later to cut Presbyterian's lead to 12-9 at the break.

Delaware State scored its third straight goal when Peets found the net early in the second period to pull the Hornets to within 12-10.

Etkins scored her fifth goal of the game and team-high seventh of the season to cut Presbyterian's lead to 16-12 with 21:44 left to play.

The Blue Hose led 18-12 when Peets scored back-to-back goals in the second half (12:33 & 11:22) to pull the Hornets to within four.

Card closed out the scoring with consecutive goals in the last 2:03 of the game for the Hornets.

Delaware State also had a school record 32 shots in the game. Its previous high was 17 last season. The Hornets also set a team record with 20 ground balls.

DSU returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 27) at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia (3:00 p.m.).

The Hornets will play their 2014 home opener next Saturday (Mar. 1) against Mount St. Mary's. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
