Farmville, Va. (Feb. 16, 2014) ---The Delaware State University women's lacrosse team opened its second season with a 23-3 loss to Longwood this afternoon.
Katie McHugh led 10 Longwood scorers with six goals. Kacey Norwood had four goals and four assists for while Lauren Prasnicki tallied two goals and seven assists for a game-high nine points for the Lancers.
After Longwood scored the game's first goal at the 28:46 mark of the first period, the Hornets answered 25 seconds later to tie the game.
Delaware State's Emily Etkins (fr.), playing in her first collegiate contest, beat Longwood goal keeper Christian Acker for an unassisted score at the 28:21 mark to tie the game at 1-1.
The Lancers responded by scoring 12 straight first period goals to take a 13-1 lead at the half.
Longwood opened the second period with five consecutive scores to open up an 18-1 advantage.
The Hornets halted the Longwood run with a goal by Cris Glenn (jr.) on a free position shot at the 19:42 mark of the second period to make it an 18-2 score. Glenn was fourth on the team with three goals last season.
Delaware State closed out the scoring with 1:00 left to play on Etkins' second goal of the contest.
The Hornets were outshot 42-12 in the contest. Etkins had a team-high six shots, while Emily Peets (jr.) had three and Glenn two.
Delaware State increased its shot total to eight in the second period after getting off four in the opening frame. The Hornets also committed nine fewer turnovers in the second period than the first.
DSU returns to action next Saturday (Feb. 22) at Presbyterian. Game time is 1:00 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.
The Hornets will play their 2014 home opener on Mar. 1 against Mount St. Mary's. Start time is 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
