Dover, Del. (Oct. 3, 2014) --- New Jersey Tech posted a .415 hitting percentage in a 3-0 win over Delaware State in a non-conference match in Memorial Hall this evening.
The scores were 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17.
The first set featured 10 ties. The score was 16-16 when the Hornets scored three straight points, two on combined blocks by Ariana Stevens (so.; Los Angeles, Cal) and Jenessa Helu (so.; Danville, Cal.), to open up a 19-16 lead. The Highlanders battled back to force a 21-21 tie.
NJIT scored the last three points of the set to claim the win.
Delaware State scored the first two points of the second set before falling behind 9-5. The Hornets trailed 20-14 in set two, but used a 4-0 run to pull to within two points. The Highlanders had 16 kills and just two errors on 22 attempts in the second set (.636). The Hornets were plagued by nine errors in set two.
In the third set, NJIT scored the first five points; and opened up a 15-3 lead on a DSU error. The Hornets pulled to within 20-16, but the Highlanders scored five of the last six points to close out the set and the match.
NJIT (5-13) collected 42 kills and eight errors on 82 attacks in the contest. The Hornets (0-12) tallied 27 kills and 15 errors on 78 attacks for a .154 hitting percentage.
NJIT's Nina Vukotic led all players with 11 kills, while her sister Danica posted 10 winners. Alyssa Armada assisted on 34 of the Highlanders' 42 kills.
Jasmine Jackson (jr.; So. Riding, Va.) and Nevershi Ellis (fr.; Chicago, Ill.) led Delaware State with seven kills each. Natalia Mendieta (jr.; Aurora, Ill.) had a team-high 13 assists, while Ayanna Lee (fr.; Washington, D.C.) led all players with 10 digs for the Hornets. Lee has reached double-figures in digs in two of the last three matches.
The Hornets will remain at home for their next contest, a MEAC match against Morgan State on Sunday (Oct. 5). Start time is 1 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
