Dover, Del. (Apr. 9, 2013) --- Delaware State left 15 men on base in an 8-1 loss to St. Joseph's (Pa.) in a college baseball contest at Soldier Field today.
The Hawks scored seven unanswered runs after the score was tied at 1-1 en route to their 16th victory of the season (16-16). The Hornets fell to 20-10.
Brian O'Keefe, Chris Hueth and John Brue drove in two runs each, while the St. Joe's bullpen shutout DSU on five hits over the last 4.1 innings.
St. Joe's opened the scoring with a run in the first inning off Delaware State starter Ryan Haas.
The Hornets tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third. Cameron Cecil led off the third with a walk. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Haas. The next batter, Aaron Nardone, reached base on an infield single. Cecil advanced to third on the hit and scored on a St. Joe's throwing error on the play.
The Hawks regained the lead, 3-1, when Brue tripled in two runs in the fourth.
St. Joe's added three runs in the fifth inning to open up a 6-1 lead.
Hueth had a two-run doubled in the seventh to close out the scoring for the Hawks.
Third baseman Cameron Onderko had three of Delaware State's eight hits in the contest.
Mike Muha (1-0) tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for the Hawks.
Haas (0-2) was tagged with the loss for the Hornets. He allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits, while striking out six in four innings.
Delaware State is back in action on Wednesday (Apr. 10) at Lehigh. The Hornets return home for a three-game MEAC North series against Coppin State this weekend.
