McCLAIN PITCHES HORNETS TO FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

Rock Hill, S.C. (Feb. 24, 2013) --- Matt McClain tossed a three-hit shutout and Aaron Nardone was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in to lead Delaware State to its first win of the season, 5-0 at Winthrop on Saturday. The game was called after six innings due to rain. McClain scattered three singles, while striking out four and walking one in his season debut. The shutout was the fourth of his career.

Nardone had three of the Hornets' eight hits. He tripled in the game's first two runs in DSU's three-run second inning. Ryan Haas reached on an error to lead off the inning. Eddie Sorondo followed with a single to give the Hornets runners on first and second. Nardone then laced a triple to right field to score Haas and Sorondo. The next batter, Joey Babuca, drove in Nardone on a ground out to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead.

McClain set down the Eagles in order in the second and fifth innings to preserve the lead.

The Hornets added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth.

Nardone doubled to lead off the inning for his third hit of the game. He advanced to third on a wild pitch. Joey Babuca followed with a walk to put runners on first and third. The next batter, Hassan Evans, singled in Nardone to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead. Babuca scored DSU's fifth run on a Winthrop throwing error.

Hornet second baseman J.P. Frey was 2-for-4, including a double.
